PRE-MED PROGRAMS
Volunteer experience is looked on highly by medical schools. It shows that you have concern for your fellow citizens and that you are willing to work to make a difference in the world. While volunteering in a medical setting can be very helpful, any volunteer experience is good, especially experience that puts you in direct contact with people. Choose a volunteer experience that you would enjoy. Do not rule out volunteer opportunities because they are not medically related. For example, if you enjoy working with children, volunteer at an elementary school.
Below we have listed contact information for the volunteer coordinators at the hospitals in Duluth. It is possible to volunteer at almost any nursing home or clinic in the area. Please click on the links and get more information on the volunteering opportunities these organizations have.

2. JOB SHADOWING
Shadowing is an opportunity that allows you to follow a professional in their occupational setting to learn more about that profession. It is extremely important to job shadow as you continue to pursue a career in medicine. Medical schools look for prospective medical students to have experience in health care and know what they are getting themselves into.
It is important to remember when shadowing, you are under the same obligations as the professional you are shadowing. Remember that doctor-patient confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of medicine. Your future patients and the ones you are currently observing depend on your discretion. Please be respectful of this rule.
Shadowing opportunities with the Pre-professional advisory board will be available in the near future. If you have any questions regarding this, email pmc@css.edu.
Another option that you may want to consider is shadowing physicians in your hometown and clinic you visit. Ask them if they would allow you to shadow them. Physicians who know you tend to be more willing to help you.
